The laning deep-dive: the first ten minutes, under a microscope

"We lost lane" is a symptom. The deep-dive is about the six or seven decisions that produced it.

The most reviewed and least understood phase

Every team reviews laning, because it happens at the start and everyone is still paying attention. Most of that review is unhelpfully coarse. "We lost the safe lane" is a conclusion, not an observation, and it leads directly to the least useful coaching instruction in Dota: try harder next time.

The laning stage is actually a dense sequence of small, reviewable decisions — where the wave sits, who is spending regen and on what, when to pull, when to stack, whether a trade was worth taking, and whether a rotation gained more than the lane it left behind. Each of those is coachable. "Lost lane" is not.

CS deltas at the checkpoints that matter

Last hits and denies against the direct lane opponent at five and ten minutes. Two checkpoints, chosen because they answer different questions.

At five
The pure lane read, before most rotations and pulls have muddied it. This is close to a measurement of the matchup and the first three minutes of execution.
At ten
The lane plus everything that happened to it — rotations, pulls, ganks, and how the team responded. A lane that was even at five and behind at ten is usually a story about the map, not about the two players in it.

The gap between the two checkpoints is where most of the interesting information lives. Reading them together separates "we were outplayed in lane" from "our lane was fine and we abandoned it".

Denies are reported alongside last hits rather than folded into a single number, because they measure something different. Denies are a statement about lane control and equilibrium; last hits are a statement about income. A player winning last hits while losing denies badly is usually standing somewhere they should not be.

Equilibrium: where the wave actually sat

Lane equilibrium mapped minute by minute, with which side moved it there. This is the single most under-reviewed thing in the laning stage, because it is invisible in any statistic and only obvious when you look at the map over time.

Equilibrium determines nearly everything else. A wave sitting near your tower makes your last hits safe and your opponent’s risky, makes ganks on you harder and ganks on them easier, and quietly decides who can afford to contest a rune. Teams often win the equilibrium battle and lose the lane anyway, or lose the equilibrium battle and never notice that this was the mechanism.

Pulls and stacks are the levers, equilibrium is the output. Reviewing pulls without the equilibrium map is reviewing an input with no way to check whether it worked.

Trade efficiency and the regen ledger

Damage dealt against damage taken for every lane skirmish, with the regen burned to recover from it. This is the metric that most often overturns the room’s memory of a lane.

A trade that looks won — they went lower than you did — can be a clear loss once the ledger includes that you spent two salves and a mango holding the position while they spent a single tango. Health is a renewable resource with a price, and in the first ten minutes that price is a meaningful fraction of everybody’s income.

Aggregated across a scrim block, the regen ledger exposes habits: a support who consistently spends their entire starting regen before minute four, an offlaner who takes profitable trades but can never convert the pressure because they have nothing left to hold the lane with, a mid who buys the same three items and never uses two of them.

A review order that works

1. Read both checkpoints before opening the replay
Five and ten together tell you which of three stories you are about to watch: lost outright, lost to the map, or lost after being won.
2. Look at equilibrium next
If the wave was in a bad place for most of the lane, that is the thing to fix, and it is a mechanical, drillable fix.
3. Then the trade ledger
Now ask whether the trades taken were worth their cost. This is where individual decision-making lives.
4. Only then watch it
Open the replay knowing what you are looking for. Watching ten minutes of laning with no hypothesis is how review time disappears.

The pay-off for reviewing laning precisely is disproportionate, because laning is the most repeatable phase in Dota. The same five people play the same three lanes against similar match-ups every day, so a fix applies immediately and repeatedly — unlike a midgame lesson that may not recur for a week.

Questions

Why five and ten minutes specifically?

Five is close to a clean read on the lane itself, before rotations and pulls have reshaped it. Ten is the lane plus everything the map did to it. Comparing the two separates being outplayed from being abandoned.

Does it track pulls and stacks?

Yes, alongside the equilibrium map — the point is to see the lever and the result together, since a pull that did not move the wave is a pull that did not do its job.

Is the comparison against the direct lane opponent or the whole enemy team?

Against the direct opponent. A carry’s CS compared to the enemy mid is not a lane measurement, and averaging across the team hides exactly the lane you needed to look at.

Does this work for all three lanes?

Yes, per lane, including the offlane where equilibrium and regen usually matter most.
